An Environmental Vacation: 5 Cape Places to Visit for the April Break
We’ve turned the corner towards spring, and Cape Cod’s environmental organizations have dozens of exciting events and programs lined up for April’s school vacation week.
Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

Learn about the flora and fauna while exploring the salt marsh and tidal flats of Cape Cod bay on daily field walks led by expert naturalists. On April 19, join Michael Leblanc, known for his “Wolf Talk” program, for an educational presentation with his live wolf, and on April 21, walk the trails with a resident “bird nerd.” If you’re interested in sharks, don’t miss the Gills Club on April 25.
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary – Mass Audubon

There’s hardly enough time for all the kid’s programs and activities Wellfleet Bay Mass Audubon has to offer! Programs are geared toward children of different ages, and activities include making a fish print (Fantastic Fish, April 18), watching rare right whales at Herring Cove in Provincetown (Family Whale Walk, April 19), observing eels at the on-site eel ladder (Examining Eels, April 21), and walking nature trails and searching for creatures like frogs and salamanders in their natural, muddy habitats (Exploring Vernal Pools, April 25).

Dust off your bike helmets and head to the trails of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Paved trails run from Orleans to Wellfleet, and pick up back again in Provincetown’s Province Lands. The Salt Pond Visitor Center hosts interesting exhibits year-round, and the park has a network of self-guided walking trails to explore. For an eye-opening experience, visit the ocean beaches to see the coastline changed by a stormy winter.

Kids will be enchanted by lively seal feedings, held twice daily. The museum is open from 11 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Visitors can enjoy the exhibit cases and touch tanks, and they are allowed behind the scenes to observe staff as they feed and care for the animals.

Join a family candy making class on April 19, and go home with butterscotch bird nests, candy eggs, and cranberry chocolate fudge. On April 24, drop in for a visit with a naturalist and a resident animal (Critter Capers), or settle in for a lively reading of “Peter Rabbit” on April 25 (Burgess Story Times). There’s also a puppet parade on April 22, and a nighttime exploration of the Briar Patch trails, complete with a campfire and marshmallows (Creatures of the Dark, April 21).
